Can You Trust Your Emotions?
Emotions often feel like a double-edged sword—powerful and intense, yet elusive and sometimes bewildering.

Living in a big, bustling city like New York can bring up a lot of powerful emotions on any given day. It can be difficult to know how much attention to pay to these feelings. Learning to become aware of, and allow yourself to fully experience, emotion is central to somatic therapy. In order to achieve this, we need to understand not just what emotions are, but how they interact with our bodies and minds.
Emotions are intricate responses involving our thoughts, physical sensations, and even our past experiences. They arise from our brains' interpretation of external events or internal states and manifest as physiological reactions—racing hearts, sweaty palms, or even a tight chest. In somatic therapy, we view emotions as valuable signals rather than mere disruptions.
When we ask if we can trust emotions, we’re essentially questioning their reliability and validity. Stefan Allen-Hickey, a therapist at Downtown Somatic Therapy in Lower Manhattan, says “emotions are neither inherently trustworthy nor untrustworthy; they are information. They provide insight into our internal landscape and often point to underlying needs or unresolved issues”.
“Emotions are like compasses—they offer direction and insight but are not infallible.’”
Somatic therapy emphasizes the interconnectedness of the body and mind. According to this approach, our emotions have physical counterparts. For instance, anxiety might present as a tightness in the abdomen or a knot in the shoulders. By tuning into these bodily sensations, we gain a clearer understanding of our emotional states.
So, can we trust these physical manifestations of emotion? In many ways, yes. They are often more immediate and less filtered than our cognitive interpretations. Stefan says “a somatic therapist might encourage you to explore these sensations through practices like deep breathing, body scanning, or gentle movement. These methods can reveal the raw, unprocessed aspects of your emotions”.
Emotions are like compasses—they offer direction and insight but are not infallible. Sometimes, emotions can be distorted by past traumas or cognitive biases. For example, a person might experience overwhelming fear in a situation that isn't objectively dangerous, based on past experiences. In such cases, emotions are not untrustworthy; they are simply reflecting past conditioning.
Somatic therapy helps differentiate between the genuine, current emotional state and those influenced by historical or irrational factors. By developing a deeper awareness of bodily sensations and their origins, you can discern whether your emotions are signaling immediate truths or echoing old patterns.

Trusting your emotions involves cultivating awareness and integrating them thoughtfully. Somatic therapy encourages you to observe and engage with your emotions without judgment. This means acknowledging emotions as they arise, feeling them in your body, and exploring their messages.
Awareness allows you to differentiate between a transient emotional wave and a deeper, more persistent feeling. It also helps you identify whether your emotions are leading you toward constructive actions or are rooted in past wounds that need healing.
Ultimately, trusting emotions involves balance. Emotions are genuine responses that provide valuable insights, but they should be considered alongside rational thought and contextual understanding. Somatic therapy aids in this balance by anchoring emotional experiences in the body, providing a fuller picture of what you’re experiencing and why.
In essence, you can trust your emotions as sources of meaningful information, but it’s crucial to interpret them within a broader context. Through somatic practices, you learn to engage with your emotions in a grounded and insightful way, fostering a healthier relationship with yourself and your inner world.
